Appellate
Appellate laterals, recruited nationwide.
For appellate lawyers the writing sample often decides the outcome.
The Search
Briefs, arguments, and clerkships.
We start with your writing: the briefs you drafted, any arguments you presented, your clerkship history, and the courts you have worked in. Lateral Lock builds the search on that record.
- Where appellate work is the job.A record of merits briefs and argument in the courts of appeals is staffed differently from a record of trial-court motions, even when a clerkship is on the resume. We look for groups where briefing and argument are the main work and your background fits.
- Researching the practice. We look at how much of each group's work is true appellate work and in which courts it practices.
- Choosing the sample. We help choose the writing sample and shape the resume so briefs, arguments, and clerkships appear in the order that appellate group reads first. You approve every resume edit before the resume goes out. A short cover letter leads with the writing that firm prioritizes and goes out with the submission unless you ask to see it first.
- Confidential to the end.You authorize each introduction. We prepare you for interviews and help negotiate.
